Magical things happen when you build an authentic brand. But doing so requires time and care and a willingness to be vulnerable. A willingness to examine the core of who you are and reveal it – albeit packaged neatly – to the world. A brand that operates from a place of authenticity requires depth.
This is where most new business owners fail. We’re all easily caught up in the hustle. “I just want a great logo and some brand colours,” they say. “That’s all I need.” (Trust me darlings, I know. Not only do I hear it all the time from potential clients, but I’ve made that mistake myself.)
So off you go to hire a designer (or, god forbid, a friend who knows a bit about photoshop), get a logo (that you may or may not even really, truly like), and you start putting yourself out there.
Or maybe, you put yourself out there and things seem to take off! You’re making sales, growing an audience, engaging with people and getting really excited about the direction your life is heading.
But then, crickets.
At first the lull doesn’t phase you. You’re an entrepreneur now! So you keep doing your thing. Just keep swimming. Build it and they will come, right? But they don’t. Not in the quantity or at the speed you need to meet your goals. Eventually your confidence begins to waver and you start to feel stuck.

And yes, you do need a great logo and brand colours and all the beautiful things – eventually. This is not to say that an authentic brand can’t possibly resemble any other brands that exist; that would be silly. There are bound to be overlaps – in things like values, and especially in visual appearance – but that is simply because brands are created by people and commonalities among people will always exist. (For the record, that doesn’t mean you can go ahead and try to emulate or recreate another brand – that’s just copying. And a cop-out. So don’t be a copycat, mmkay? What’s more, an emulated brand will never have the same magnetism and will always leave you feeling like you’re playing catch up.)
When you step into branding from a place of depth and authenticity – really taking the time to dive deep into all that is genuinely true to you – other people will notice, and so will you. Authentic branding is undeniably powerful.

You’ve heard it before: your vibe attracts your tribe. Authenticity is that vibe; a feeling that resonates deep in the bones of those who encounter it. When you hold back or try to alter parts of your authentic self there is a disconnect, either undetectable or blatantly obvious, that repels people on a subconscious level. Needless to say, not tapping into or expressing your authenticity will cost you: paycheques, validation, connection, fulfillment, and the growth of your brand.
2. You’ll gain major focus, make decisions with ease, and rid yourself of analysis paralysis.
While others might be jumping at every opportunity that comes their way, or be completely frozen not knowing what to do and when to do it, you’ll be proactively creating the right opportunities for where you want to go, using the methods that feel good and get results for your business. Next time you begin to compare, give yourself a little slap on the wrist and change course: become an analyzer instead of a comparer, and start jotting down all the advantages and unique ways you and your brand are different from your perceived competition. Be sure to include your background and experience – no one has walked exactly the same path as you, and that colours the way you do what you do.
A brand is not optional. It’s the driving force behind that thing you do / make / sell.
